Mas Oller Wine Tasting Costa Brava

Mas Oller: our experience – Wine tasting in the Costa Brava

Why do a wine tasting tour at Mas Oller

As a wine lover, it only seemed natural that I should visit one of the most popular vineyards in the area and join a wine tasting tour. Of course, we love to ensure we try out the experiences we are recommending to our clients and this experience was particularly exciting for me.

I have always been a fan of Mas Oller wine – the white ‘Mar’ was always a favourite to order on the beach front in Tamariu with some tapas as we enjoy the views of the Costa Brava coast. But what I never realised is how close the vineyard was from me the whole time and how fascinating the story of this winery is, as well as get to join a wine tasting tour and try their full range.

I decided to join a group tour and wine tasting at Mas Oller with my mother-in-law (another fan of white wine, especially the crisp and dry whites) and when we parked in the finca, we were warmly welcomed by the team. The date was in May so the weather was just ideal – not too hot but you could feel the sun on the back of your neck. The group was around 15 strong and all spoke English so the friendly guide said she would take the tour in English.

The start of the tour

After a brief welcome and introduction, the guide took us on a walk to see the vineyards as well as give us a bit of history about the wine, the land and the company. It was the perfect amount of information as the group ambled directly through the vineyards themselves. Perhaps we were lucky, but the group we were with were also really invested in the tour, so a number of interesting facts were discussed in mass conversation, allowing us to discover more about the processes and methods of this historical vineyard.

From the outside, we went inside and were impressed by the mixture of machinery and human input, staying true to the roots of Mas Oller. The delightful guide picked up confidence talking about the processes, temperatures and potential issues that could arise in the making of the wine.

Really, all of this was only about 45 minutes which was absolutely ideal. It was enough to get the history and the feel of the winery, creating a closer and more personal relationship to the wine and the region than I had ever experienced before.

Did you know?

One thing that really stood out was the reasons why and how the wine produced at Mas Oller can be organic. Anyone who lives and knows the area can vouch for the number of ‘bichos’ thanks to the rural surroundings. But, Mas Oller’s wines are organic. So how do they ensure no insects ruin the vines? Well, they don’t as such. The vineyard is so perfectly placed in the Costa Brava where high winds blow on often occasions, including the dreaded ‘tramontana’ wind, that it literally blows the insects off the vines. So simple and so natural – the insects cannot physically create their homes here.

The wine tasting begins

After the tour, we were sat at small tables in the beautiful courtyard of Mas Oller and given a menu of wines ready for the wine tasting. We were not going to try them all, but it was a great conversation starter with the table to look through, discuss those we have tried before and talk about the descriptions. Cheese and breadsticks were brought on platters to the table and the first wine was introduced.

The wine tasting begun and we tried their white wine, rose and two red wines. Needless to say, we were fabulously impressed and it was clear why Mas Oller are one of the leading organic vineyards in the local area. Each wine was introduced clearly and each table received direct attention from the team, ensuring we know the subtle notes in the wines and what we should consider to drink them with.

There was absolutely no obligation to buy the wine in the shop after the wine tasting, but you are certainly intrigued by the rustic charm of their shop room. Naturally, we bought a few bottles of the white wine (it does taste better directly from the source!) As well as a bottle of their white cava, and a bottle of their pink cava. Our opinion? The pink fizz is up there with one of the best cava’s we have both tried. We would highly recommend it!

A recommended activity in the Costa Brava

In general, we would highly recommend this experience. The group tours are fabulous and if you want to be immersed in the local area with local providers, it really is a worthwhile trip to make during your visit to the area. Of course, the wine tasting is also a delight!

There are further experiences at this wonderful place including private tours and tastings, lunch and even over night stays to really take in the rural side of the Catalan coast.

If you want to book this tour, get in touch with us to get availability and take care of the booking for you for the same prices as you find online.
